Explore the new Faial Journey and enjoy happy moments with your family or friends in the amazing landscape of the blue island!

The Centro de Interpretação do Vulcão dos Capelinhos – CCV is the great novelty of the 9th edition of the Ciência Viva Journeys Guidebook.

At the Centre, we watched a real live geology lesson on the volcanoes of the Azores and the world and ended the visit by climbing up to the old lighthouse. There we lost ourselves in the beauty of the immensity of the sea and the contrast with the landscape of the Capelinhos volcano, a Natural Monument in the Faial Natural Park and a geosite of international importance in the Azores UNESCO World Geopark.

We refreshed ourselves in the natural pools of Porto do Comprido and Varadouro, and visited Caldeira, the crater of the largest volcano on the island of Faial, with a diameter of 2 km and of incredible beauty.

On the island of Faial, we explored the diversity of the Azorean flora, travelled along lava flows, which were once active, and saw the cagarros nests on the rocks of Morro de Castelo Branco, a Nature Reserve and geosite.

In the city of Horta, we took a cultural tour of its Museum and visite the Manuel de Arriaga House, the 1st President of the Portuguese Republic. You cannot miss its Marina as it is an open-air art gallery. At the Porto Pim Whale Factory, we went back to the time of whaling and returned to the present, where cetacean conservation is the main objective and mission.

Finally, we felt the historic cosmopolitanism of the city that was the centre of North Atlantic telegraph communications in the first half of the 20th century.

We had happy times on the blue island, and all we can think about is to return!
